Be a teacher and a student

Freshly brewed hazelnut-flavoured-plunger-grind coffee. Mmmmm ……

The thing about being a woman is this. We are known for our compassionate, nurturing qualities, our supportive attitudes, our empathy and our ability to collaborate. And our tenacity. Tell a woman she cannot do it and she will deliberately and decisively prove you wrong.

Santie Botha (2010 BWA Businesswoman of the Year) notably encourages us to “Be a student and a teacher every day.”

As women we should feel a responsibility to empower and mentor those around us. We should teach what we have learnt in books and with experience. We should share our life’s stories to inspire others.

We must also make an effort to sit quietly and learn from others. We should look to the female leaders in our country for example. We should look for businesswomen and change-facilitators that will challenge our thinking and enthuse us with new ideas. We should surround ourselves with a handpicked selection of female friends and relatives that will encourage, empower and uplift us with honesty, passion, intelligent debate and nurturing coffee-cup-conversations.

So I urge you to look for at least one role model that will help you step outside your comfort zone and at least one friend that will support you on this journey of self-discovery. But my real challenge is this – find opportunities to teach and mentor. Let’s make it our collective responsibility to uplift and empower the women around us.

Believe that you have something worthwhile to share and do so wholeheartedly.
