A new mind.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Rom 12:2 NLT)
I am well versed in the dialogue of womanhood. I over-analyze, I interpret (and misinterpret!) I suppose and I ponder and I think and think and think. What if she said that to mean this? What if he did that because he wanted me to know this? Why, did she do / say that? And all of this amateur pscyho-analyzing leaves me exhausted, suspicious and often negative.
But the promise of Romans 12:2 says to me (and you) that we don’t have to allow our thoughts to rule us. We don’t have to get sucked into negative thinking patterns. We can change this negative behaviour, simply by handing our thoughts over to God. He can change each of us.
Let’s try to rework our thoughts by:
- Switching from negative self-talk to thankful joy (i.e. Instead of the why, how and what questions we are so fond of – “Thank you Lord for x and x and x”.
- Asking God to change your thoughts, to renew your mind and to focus your thinking on His will and purpose for you.
- Use your mind as a valuable resource. Read, learn, think, create and grow in areas where you experience positive energy and affirmation. Spend more time learning and growing and less time pondering and wondering.
